Sudan military says overran key rebel base (Reuters)

December 4, 2011 Category :excellent 0

KHARTOUM (Reuters) ? Sudan’s military said it overran a key rebel base in the South Kordofan border state on Saturday, the latest push by government forces to assert control over the volatile territory.

The insurgent group, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army North (SPLA-N), denied it had troops stationed in the area named by Sudan’s armed forces, located in the loosely demarcated border region with newly independent South Sudan.

Fighting on both sides of the boundary has strained ties between Khartoum and Juba and complicated talks over issues such as oil and debt left unresolved since the south seceded in July under a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war.

Both sides have accused the other of supporting rebel groups on either side of the border.

“The Sudanese army attacked and took control of an SPLA base at 4:30 this afternoon in the Baheirat al-Abiyad Jau region,” Sudan’s armed forces spokesman Al-Sawarmi Khalid said by phone.

“This is considered the headquarters of the SPLA in South Kordofan,” he said, adding that “a number” of rebels were killed in the fighting.

Qamar Dalman, a spokesman for the SPLA-N in South Kordofan, denied the group had soldiers in the area.

“Our troops aren’t present in that area because it falls in South Sudan according to the … 1956 border,” he said, referring to an internal boundary drawn shortly before Sudan became independent.

A spokesman for South Sudan’s military was not immediately available to comment.

The SPLA-N fighters in South Kordofan and Blue Nile served as divisions of the southern rebel army during Sudan’s civil war, but were left on the northern side of the border when the south seceded.

Clashes broke out between the insurgents and government troops in June, with both sides blaming the other for provoking the violence.

Khartoum accuses Juba of continuing to back the SPLA-N rebels, which both South Sudan and the rebels deny.

South Sudan voted overwhelmingly to secede in a January referendum, culmination of the 2005 peace deal that ended what was one of Africa’s longest and deadliest wars. Some 2 million people died in the conflict.

Genes May Make Quitting Tougher for Smokers (HealthDay)

December 4, 2011 Category :excellent 0

THURSDAY, Dec. 1 (HealthDay News) — Despite decades of public health efforts aimed at snuffing out cigarette smoking, 20 percent of Americans still light up. New research suggests it might be because of their genes.

While anti-smoking campaigns are credited with slicing cigarette use drastically over the past 40 years — from 42 percent of all Americans in 1965 to just under 20 percent in 2010 — the number of people who haven’t been able to nix their nicotine habit has flatlined in recent years, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Two out of three adults who smoke want to quit, a CDC report out earlier this month said, and more than half (52 percent) had attempted to quit in the past year.

The authors of the new study, released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of Demography, say new tactics may be needed to help the remaining smokers.

“Federal and social policies may be somewhat less effective now because maybe the composition of those at risk [those who smoke] has changed,” said study co-author Fred Pampel, a professor of sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a research associate at the Institute of Behavioral Science there. Those who can quit easily have probably done so, the authors said.

Study lead author Jason Boardman, an associate professor of sociology, said anti-smoking messages, higher taxes and restrictions on smoking have made a difference. “But for hard-core smokers, there may be something else going on,” he said. That “something else” is likely genetics, he added.

The researchers drew this conclusion after analyzing the smoking habits between 1960 and 1980 of nearly 600 pairs of twins who answered an extensive health questionnaire — 363 were identical sets of twins and 233 were fraternal twins. Identical twins come from the same fertilized egg before it splits into two embryos and they share the same genes or DNA, while fraternal twins come from two separately fertilized egg cells and only share some genetic similarities.

In the identical twin group, 65 percent of both individuals quit within a two-year period of each other, while only 55 percent of the fraternal twins quit within that same stretch of time.

“The logic here is that the identical twins share genes, so if they act alike it probably reflects a genetic component,” said Pampel.

The new research adds to a growing body of literature suggesting there is probably a substantial genetic influence when it comes to nicotine addiction, said Dr. Aditi Satti, an assistant professor of medicine and director of the smoking cessation program at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. But scientists are still trying to pinpoint the gene or genes involved, she said.

“There has not been one specific gene linked to nicotine addiction,” said Satti.

She noted that while numbers of smokers have decreased over the years, smoking is up among women and black Americans, possibly another clue as to who is genetically at risk. Inner city, low socioeconomic and less-educated populations are more likely to be smokers, too, Satti added.

“I think the combo of finding better medications and educating people, even if doctors just spend five minutes talking with your patient about smoking, will lead to higher quit rates,” Satti said.

Boardman said a policy shift might be in line. Instead of government anti-smoking campaigns focusing on high taxes and splashy advertisements, he said current smokers may discover more success using medication aimed at nicotine addiction, as well as counseling.

“I’d argue that nicotine replacement therapies may be far more effective with existing smokers still trying to quit than the posters showing images of smokers that are not cool. Behavior-changing efforts — I don’t think that’s going to help the two-pack a day smokers,” said Boardman, who is also a research associate at the Institute of Behavioral Science.

Smoking-related diseases lead to approximately 443,000 deaths a year in the United States, including babies born prematurely to women who smoke while pregnant and those harmed by secondhand smoke, according to the American Lung Association.

Satti is concerned that cigarette addiction isn’t taken seriously enough by some.

“Maybe we don’t see smoking as being as important as alcohol and drug addiction, but I’m a pulmonologist and I see chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema and lung cancer every day,” she said. “And we know tobacco smoke is linked to cardiovascular disease and stroke. It’s one of the most preventable things you can do. If you quit smoking, you’ll see a huge impact on health.”

PSA: Mophie and Best Buy issue separate iDevice battery pack recalls due to overheating concerns

December 4, 2011 Category :excellent 0

Sporting an external battery pack on your iPod Touch or iPhone? If it happens to be from Mophie or Best Buy’s Rocketfish brand, we’d advise you to take note and avoid getting burned. Rocketfish’s RF-KL12 battery case for the iPhone 3G / 3GS has been reported in a small number of burn and “minor” fire incidents, while Mophie’s announced that a select number of Juice Pack Air models for the 4th generation iPod Touch (seen above) are at risk for overheating, and potentially even melting. Suffice it to say, if you’re currently in possession of said battery extenders you should stop using it immediately. Best Buy asks that owners of the Rocketfish case get in touch to facilitate a return, which will be met with a $70 gift card in the US ($105 in Canada) as compensation. As for Mophie? If your Juice Pack Air is among the affected serial numbers, you’ll be able to initiate a swap for a fresh unit via a return form on its website. Hit those source links below for all the details — this is one case where you definitely won’t want to feel the burn.

Quirky obituary endears Conn. prof to new audience (AP)

December 4, 2011 Category :excellent 0

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Robert Spiegel’s passion for Russian literature, the New York Mets, ethnic cooking and beagles endeared him to generations of students and colleagues at Central Connecticut State University. Now, through the power of social media, the 77-year-old former English professor’s obituary is charming strangers, as well.

Spiegel, a resident of the Hartford suburb of Berlin and a native of New York City, died Wednesday after a struggle with cardiac disease and dementia. He was eulogized in a quirky obituary written by his son that appeared Friday in central Connecticut newspapers.

It quickly started spreading on strangers’ Facebook pages and Twitter feeds, usually accompanied by the readers’ admissions they did not know him ? but wished they had, based on the richly detailed obituary.

“Whereas the disease did thankfully erase most memories of the `62 Mets season, it eventually also claimed his life,” his obituary read, referring to his beloved team’s 40-120 record in a year that took 10 games just to get their first win.

Friends and family say the obituary and its response are a fitting coda for the life of a man who loved spurring conversation, whether it was about good writing, New York sports teams or the satisfaction of sipping a high-quality single malt Scotch whiskey.

“He was a very humble man, and reaching some level of postmortem fame would really please him. I’m sure he would have been delighted by it, and surprised,” said Kevin Lynch, a fellow English professor emeritus at Central Connecticut who worked with Spiegel for 32 years.

Spiegel was a high school teacher in Brooklyn before joining Central Connecticut State’s faculty in 1965. He was accompanied on his move by his wife, Ursula, whom he’d met on a blind date under New York City’s Washington Square arch.

He quickly took on a reputation at Central Connecticut as a teacher who could leave a roomful of students entranced by anything from Dostoyevsky to the literature of baseball ? something his obituary called “a thinly veiled therapy to alleviate the trauma he sustained from coaching arguably the worst Little League team in recorded (or unrecorded) history and from the sufferings he endured from 40 years as a devout Mets fan.”

Such lines in his obituary were what caught the eye of many strangers Friday, some of whom pondered in Facebook postings whether Spiegel had written the death notice himself.

Though his family would have liked that, they said, the progress of his dementia made it impossible. Instead, it was written by his son, Jeff, who described himself in the obituary as someone “who, if nothing else to show from his lineage, inherited his father’s sardonic sense of humor.”

The unusual obituary also gave readers a window into the effects of the dementia that first became evident when it stole Robert Spiegel’s ability to read, then continued creeping onward as caretakers helped his wife keep him in their home until his hospitalization late last week.

Spiegel’s obituary was so untraditional that family members and the funeral home traded calls back and forth Thursday as the directors wanted to double check that yes, indeed, the Spiegels wanted it to appear exactly that way.

“Robert Spiegel of Kensington was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 2, 1934, lived and subsequently died,” the opening line reads. “Most of his noteworthy accomplishments happened in said middle part.”

The obituary described the dayslong vigil at his hospital bed before his death amid what his son described as lively conversation against a backdrop of the music of Jimmy Buffett and Bob Marley, “chicken curry and the occasional smuggled glass of Glenlivet.”

And true to his love of Russian literature, the password for callers seeking information at the hospital about his condition was “Vanya,” an ode to the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov ? a detail his family is sure he would have loved.

As his dementia progressed in recent years, Spiegel sat down one day with his wife, and they wrote a list of things to remember for his eventual memorial service: their daughter should read some Emily Dickinson poetry aloud, the dress code should be strictly casual, and they should dab his favorite Drakkar Noir cologne on his body after the traditional washing under their Jewish faith.

When Ursula Spiegel got out that list again this week, she found a few words added on the back in her husband’s handwriting: “Glenlivet and spicy food.”

That single malt Scotch whiskey, spicy food and other items that invoke Spiegel’s personality are expected to be part of a memorial service next spring at Central Connecticut State University. The date had not been set as of Friday, and his funeral services this week were private.

In addition to his wife and son, Spiegel is survived by a daughter, three grandchildren and several other family members. According to the obituary, he was also predeceased by his “bevy of beagles, all eternally loyal to their benevolent master, if not lacking a tad in their own intellect.”

Ursula Spiegel said she and others in the family were surprised and pleased that her husband’s obituary had struck a chord with strangers, and that he was bringing a smile to them even after his death.

“Thank God Jeff has inherited his humor,” she said. “He wrote it exactly the way Bob would have written it himself.”

The second in line to the British throne, who is a Royal Air Force helicopter pilot and known professionally as Flight Lt. William Wales, was aboard an aircraft which rescued two crew members early on Sunday, after their vessel suffered a cracked hull in gale-force winds off the coast of north Wales.

Britain’s ministry of defense said William had been co-pilot of the helicopter, which carried two people back to his base RAF Valley, on the Welsh island of Anglesey.

Authorities said five people remained missing after the 265-foot Swanland cargo ship, which had eight people on board, sent a mayday call at around 2 a.m. local time (9 p.m. ET).

‘Challenging’ conditions
Holyhead Coastguard said one body had been recovered from the sea, but that the fate of the other crew members was not yet known.

“We know that at least some of them are wearing immersion suits and have strobe lighting with them, however sea conditions are challenging at best,” said Jim Green, a coastguard spokesman.

The Swanland was reportedly carrying 3,000 tons of limestone. Its crew members were believed to be Russian.

Rescue helicopters from RAF Valley and from Dublin coastguard base in Ireland were initially sent to the scene, about 20 miles? northwest of the Llyn peninsula in north Wales.

Helicopters from RAF Chivenor, in southwest England, and the Irish Coastguard are continuing to search for the missing crew, along with boats from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

“Two RNLI lifeboats, along with four search and rescue helicopters and two other commercial boats, are searching for the remaining six crew,” the RNLI said in a statement.

Gale force winds battered the Irish Sea on Sunday and the coastguard said it is believed the poor condition could have caused the incident.
