Justin Bieber may not have visited the “X Factor” set this week, but that doesn’t mean the contestants didn’t contract a serious case of Bieber Fever.

On Tuesday night, Bieber did make his way to “Dancing With the Stars,” which shares a lot with the reality singing competition, and a handful of the “X Factor” top 12 hoped to see the teen star. One of those obsessed few included Drew, who has been a Belieber since day one of the “X Factor.”

“We love him so much,” Drew told MTV News backstage — a long way from her first audition, where she proclaimed her Bieber love.

She wasn’t the only member of Team Simon going crazy for Bieber: Fellow fan Rachel Crow, who got some rave reviews on the show this week, was also hoping to get some face time with the singer, who has been making the promo rounds for his new holiday album, Under the Mistletoe.

“We love Justin Bieber, but we didn’t get to meet him,” Rachel recalled. “People were trying so hard, like, ‘Why can’t we get Justin here?’ I got to take a picture in front of his car, though.”

And it wasn’t just any car. “It was so cool!” Rachel gushed. “Isn’t it awesome? It’s bejeweled! I want to meet him so bad,” she added, before explaining just why they couldn’t make it happen. “They made up an excuse about how they were competing shows. [I was] so upset.”

Drew and Rachel are definitely not alone on the “X Factor” set. One of the members of InTENsity has this message for the ladies: “I can honestly say that I am more obsessed with Justin Bieber than Drew is,” Emily Michalak said. “I can honestly say so. Just because they aired on TV that she’s obsessed doesn’t mean that I’m not.”

You can catch MTV News’ Jim Cantiello on the “X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show,” streaming at 7 p.m. ET Wednesdays on TheXFactorUSA.com!

LONDON (AP) ? Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich hit back against fellow oligarch Boris Berezovsky on Monday, telling a court he was never the older man’s protege and does not owe him a cent.

Berezovsky is suing Abramovich in a London court for several billion dollars, saying that Abramovich had intimidated him into selling shares in their jointly owned oil company Sibneft at a fraction of their value.

Abramovich, the media-shy owner of the Chelsea Football Club, dismissed that claim as nonsense as he took the stand at London’s Commercial Court. The case has fascinated the city’s large Russian community and provided a peek into the Wild West years that followed the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Abramovich told the court that he had never made a “legal, binding agreement” with Berezovsky over Sibneft, a Russian oil and gas conglomerate.

And in a written witness statement, he said Berezovsky “has already obtained a very substantial sum of money from me and I do not believe that he has any entitlement to be paid anything more, whether in law or honor.”

Berezovsky, who amassed a fortune during Russia’s privatization of state assets in the early 1990s, has testified that during the chaotic years after the breakup of the Soviet Union he was a mentor to Abramovich and treated him like a son. Together with a third partner they set up Sibneft.

But Berezovsky, an ally of former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, fell out with Yeltsin’s successor, Vladimir Putin, shortly after he became president in 2000. Berezovsky fled to Britain, which granted him political asylum, and has since become a fierce critic of the Kremlin.

Abramovich sold Sibneft to Russia’s state-owned gas monopoly Gazprom in a multibillion-dollar deal in 2005.

Abramovich, 45, said in his witness statement that “I was not his protege and he was not my mentor.”

He claimed Berezovsky, now 65, was a political godfather whom he paid for protection. Abramovich used the Russian word “krysha,” or roof, to describe their relationship.

“A person giving krysha to another was a person who acted as a protector,” Abramovich said in his witness statement. “I had to pay Mr. Berezovsky for the opportunity of creating the oil company under his protection.”

Abramovich’s lawyer has said that between 1995 and 2002, the younger man paid Berezovsky $2 billion for his patronage, including money for homes in France, private planes, art works and jewelry.

“At times it was difficult to meet Mr. Berezovsky’s demands and I thought they were often excessive. However I was concerned about what might happen if we lost the krysha,” Abramovich said in his statement. “If Mr. Berezovsky needed to charter a plane in order to fly somewhere, or wanted a yacht to be chartered, he would ask me to pay for it.”

Abramovich described Berezovsky as an intensely ambitious man with “far-reaching political ambitions.”

“There was at times something of a megalomaniac about him that could lead to fantastic suggestions on his part,” Abramovich said, citing one idea to restore monarchy in Russia.

“The grander the plan he entertained at any given time, the more cash he would be after in his almost-fanatical zeal to seek to make those grand plans a reality.”

The case is expected to last for two months.

NYTimes circulation up as it restricts Web access

November 2, 2011 Category :excellent 0

(AP) ? Circulation at The New York Times soared in the latest six-month reporting period because the Times now charges for access to its website and people who sign up are counted as subscribers.

The Times had print and digital circulation of 1.2 million on average from Monday through Friday. The figures released Tuesday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations cover the six months that ended Sept. 30.

The latest figures represent a gain of 25 percent from the October-March period, when average circulation was at about 917,000. However, the comparison does not factor in seasonal fluctuations.

Circulation figures affect advertising rates at newspapers, which count print ads as their main source of revenue. Print ad revenue has declined in recent years as readers and advertisers shift to the Internet. The economic downturn has worsened the decline. Some newspapers have seen growth in the digital ad revenue they derive from their websites and mobile apps, but it hasn’t been enough to offset losses in print advertising. The New York Times’ digital subscription model is being closely watched as a possible solution to the industry’s revenue shortfalls.

The Times is the third-largest U.S. newspaper on weekdays. The Wall Street Journal is No. 1 with average weekday circulation of 2.1 million, and Gannett Co.’s USA Today ranks second with 1.8 million.

The Times had the highest Sunday circulation with 1.6 million. Neither the Journal nor USA Today publishes on Sunday.

The Times’ circulation grew after it started charging fees to readers of its digital content. That began just before the start of the latest circulation reporting period. Digital subscriptions are included in the circulation totals. Newspapers aren’t allowed to count visitors to free websites as circulation.

The Times’ circulation might have fallen were it not for the digital subscriptions. The Times had about 771,000 print subscribers in the latest period, compared with about 816,000 in the October-March period. Still, the Times said Sunday home delivery subscriptions grew slightly from last year; many people bought or kept a print subscription because it comes with free digital access.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations did not release industry-wide totals that could be compared with last year because of major rule changes in how circulation is counted.

In recent years, circulation has been declining at newspapers in part because readers are shifting from printed editions to free news sources on the Web and on mobile devices. For most newspapers, digital subscriptions have not caught on. The exceptions are primarily publications with national clout.

During the April-September period, the Times had average weekday digital circulation of 380,003 and Sunday circulation of 371,933. News Corp.’s Journal also offers digital subscriptions and had a weekday average of 537,469.

Outsell Inc. media analyst Ken Doctor said that if the Times continues to persuade people to buy digital subscriptions, it could bring in $50 million to $75 million per year in additional circulation revenue. That will be important, he said, as print advertising revenue keeps falling.

Citigroup analyst Leo Kulp believes the Times won’t collect enough from digital subscriptions to offset a decline in print ads. As a result, he downgraded the Times Co.’s stock last week.

Brain damage makes some blind to the left

The patient demanded to know whose left arm was lying in the hospital bed with him. “He would pick it up and throw it out of bed. The arm would come back and hit him in the chest,” recalls Dr. Kenneth Heilman, an American Academy of Neurology fellow. Here’s the kicker: It was his own arm.

Latest developments in the global Occupy protests (AP)

November 1, 2011 Category :excellent 0

Some of the latest developments in the Occupy protests taking place in cities across the world:

UNITED STATES

TENNESSEE

Tennessee state troopers for the second straight night arrested Wall Street protesters for defying a new nighttime curfew imposed by the Republican governor, in an effort to disband an encampment near the state Capitol in Nashville.

And also for a second time, a night judge dismissed the arrest warrants, saying there was no authority for a curfew.

Occupy Nashville protesters ? including many of the 29 arrested in a pre-dawn raid on Friday ? returned to the Legislative Plaza on Friday evening and remained through the 10 p.m. curfew. Troopers moved in after theater-goers had mostly left the area.

Troopers wouldn’t give any details other than that a press release would be issued later Saturday. After the arrested protesters were handcuffed, photographed and put on a bus, one trooper told another at the scene that 26 people had been apprehended.

Protesters remaining at the scene vowed to return Saturday, even if it means more arrests.

CALIFORNIA

Oakland’s police chief says he takes responsibility for a crackdown on anti-Wall Street protesters, who have accused police of seriously injuring an Iraq War veteran during a clash earlier this week.

Interim Chief Howard Jordan’s defended the officers involved in the effort to drive protesters from a dayslong encampment, saying they used what they believed to be the least amount of force possible to protect themselves.

The plight of Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen, 24 ? who remained hospitalized in fair condition with a fractured skull ? has become a rallying cry at Occupy protests around the world.

Fellow veterans say police fired an object that struck him in the head, but authorities say object has yet to be definitively established, as well as the person responsible for the injury.

Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore addressed about 1,000 anti-Wall Street protesters in front of Oakland’s City Hall on Friday, saying the Occupy movement has changed the national discussion.

Meanwhile, a protest encampment at a plaza near the City Hall grew to about 50 tents, with organizers saying up to a thousand people were in the area late Friday night with very few police in sight.

The Oakland protesters announced a general strike on Nov. 2 where they will be urging banks and corporations to close for the day.

MAINE

Maine groups aligned with the Occupy Wall Street movement plan to rally Saturday.

Occupy Bangor says a rally at downtown Bangor’s Peirce Park will be followed by a march. The group says participants are organizing to show solidarity for what it calls a “feeling of mass injustice and inequality in America.”

In Portland, Occupy Maine says it will also rally Saturday with speakers, music and a march from Monument Square. The weather forecast was for 6 inches of snow Saturday evening.

NEW MEXICO

Organizers in Albuquerque plan a Saturday march at the site where about two dozen protesters were arrested earlier this week. The “1st Amendment Solidarity March” starts at University of New Mexico’s Yale Park.

Protesters were arrested after school officials ordered the four-week-old protest site closed over safety concerns. New Mexico state police raided the spot late Tuesday and have prevented protesters from returning.

Organizers are pressing city officials to allow them to relocate to Robinson Park. Albuquerque protesters met Thursday with Mayor Richard Berry, but Berry did not make a decision. He told protesters he wanted to seek a balance between free speech and public safety.

VERMONT

More than 100 social activists planned to stay the night in City Hall Park in Burlington as they worked to expand into a 24-hour operation.

The Burlington protests began on Sunday but Friday’s effort marked the first time the Vermont movement was going to try to go full time, at least initially.

City rules don’t allow the park to be used between midnight and 6 a.m. But city officials ruled Friday the protesters could stay, as long as no laws were broken and there were no threats to public safety. The city vowed to take a wait and see approach to enforcement of the camping ban.

MICHIGAN

Participants in the Traverse City protest plan to collect food, clothing and blankets for the needy.

Donations are expected to be given to area nonprofits.

EUROPE

ENGLAND

A part-time chaplain at St. Paul’s Cathedral has become the second churchman to resign over the church’s attitude to the protest outside the building.

Fraser Dyer said he was “embarrassed” by the decision to take legal action to try to evict the anti-capitalist protesters. Senior clergyman Giles Fraser resigned earlier, saying he feared moves to evict the protesters could end in violence.

Church and local government authorities are separately going to court to try to evict the protesters, though officials have acknowledged it could take weeks or months to get an order to remove the tent city.

As the iconic church reopened after a weeklong closure triggered by the protest, the City of London Corporation said it was launching legal action on the grounds that the protest is an “unreasonable user of the highway.” Scores of tents are pitched on the pedestrianized square in front of the cathedral and near a footpath alongside the building.

Japan factory output falls 4 percent in September (AP)

October 31, 2011 Category :excellent 0

TOKYO ? Japan’s factory production fell for the first time in six months in September as the export-reliant country grappled with a strong yen and global economic turmoil.

The government said Friday that factory output fell 4 percent from the previous month as manufacturers produced fewer cars, chip-related machines and cellphones. The result was worse than market expectations for a mild decline.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry described industrial production as “flat,” suggesting that Japan’s recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami is tapering off in the face of new economic worries.

A strong yen is battering exporters, whose overseas earnings shrink in value as the Japanese currency climbs. Some companies are shifting production abroad as a result, and officials worry openly about a hollowing out of Japanese industry.

The dollar hit a record low against the Japanese currency for a third straight day in New York, dropping to 75.63 yen at one point. That prompted Finance Minister Jun Azumi to warn of possible foreign exchange intervention by the government.

He reiterated his belief that speculators are behind the yen’s rise and said currency levels should “reflect the real economy.”

“We will closely watch the Tokyo market,” Azumi told reporters in Tokyo, according to Kyodo News agency.

Officials will “take decisive action when it proves necessary” to combat speculators, he added.

The government projects industrial production to rebound in the fourth quarter. The government’s survey points to an output expansion of 2.3 percent in October and 1.8 percent in November.

But those improvements may not materialize as expected because of the heavy flooding in Thailand, where many Japanese manufacturers have factories. Toyota Motor Corp., Sony Corp. and others face significant supply chain disruptions that are undermining production in Japan and elsewhere.

Separately, the government says the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1 percent in September from 4.3 percent in August. The survey was the first one since the disaster to include the tsunami-devastated prefectures of Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima.

The figure, however, does not necessarily mean more people are working.

“Despite improvements in some areas,” said Kyohei Morita, chief economist at Barclays Capital in Tokyo, in a note to clients, the lower jobless rate was “less because unemployed people found jobs and more because they stopped looking for work.”

The government also released monthly data on household spending, income and consumer prices that underscore the economy’s impact on families.

Average monthly household spending in September fell a real 1.9 percent from the previous year to 270,010 yen ($3,555). The figure is a key barometer of private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan’s gross domestic product.

Monthly household income declined 0.7 percent to 422,720 yen ($5,566), according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

The September core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh foods, rose 0.2 percent from a year earlier on higher fuel costs. Preliminary CPI for the Tokyo area ? considered an indicator of broader price trends for the country ? fell 0.4 percent in October.

Kerstin Shamberg: 'Your Dog Has Cancer'

October 29, 2011 Category :excellent 0

“Your dog has cancer.” I felt surprisingly calm when the veterinarian said those words to me. I must have been temporarily stunned.

My husband and I had been awaiting the results of a biopsy taken a few days earlier after my dog, Peebucks, had a severe and uncontrollable nosebleed. I worked from home for a few days afterwards, afraid to leave him home alone in case the bleeding reoccurred. When the phone finally rang, a wave of anxiety swept over me. (Over the years, I’ve come to hate the sound of a phone ringing. Bad news so often travels by phone).

I heard the words the doctor said, but they just swam around in my mind disconnectedly. “Nasal carcinoma.” “Undifferentiated.” “No metastasis.” “Prognosis poor.” “Treatment: radiation therapy, chemotherapy.” “Maybe we can increase his life by a year or two, but this will probably kill him.”

After the initial calm, I got off the phone and collapsed into a sobbing mess. Peebucks ran over to comfort me, licking the tears from my face. He had no idea why I was crying of course, but he has always been an incredible consoler. When my maternal grandmother died, Peebucks was there. When my paternal grandmother died, Peebucks was there. And when my father died unexpectedly last year, Peebucks was on my lap immediately, licking the tears from my face. He can always sense my pain – that’s why I try my best to hide it from him now that my pain relates to his wellness.

It was silly, but as we lay there together, Peebucks all warmth and love, I decided not to tell him he has cancer.

Peebucks is an 11-year-old pit bull mix with an enormous heart. Fate brought him into my life when he was one, and through ups and downs, he was always by my side. My baby. My best friend. My confidant. My soul mate. Always smiling. Always happy to see me.

Many fear him because of the way he looks. I’m used to people crossing the street to avoid him. I’m used to comments in passing: “Hope that dog had a big meal today.” “He bite?” “Now that’s a mean lookin’ dog.” At times, depending on my mood, I’ve defended him to these people. Not that he knows or cares about what they are saying, but I do. His big jowls could be intimidating, I suppose, but to me he just looks like he’s smiling. He wouldn’t harm a fly (well, except for the one he caught in his mouth many years back), and if anyone had planned to keep him as a watchdog they would have picked the wrong pup, as his usual reaction when he meets a stranger is to wiggle his butt happily and plead to be rubbed.

After consulting with several veterinary experts and doing mounds of research, we decided that treatment was a viable option and that his quality of life would only be compromised temporarily. It’s not cheap, of course, but we are making sacrifices and taking on debt to pay for it. The health insurance we have for him is riddled with loopholes and will likely prove useless. But, right now, none of that seems to matter.

Peebucks has to undergo radiation therapy five days a week for three and a half weeks. After one week of treatment, he does not yet have any side effects, but soon a radiation burn will appear and our resolve will be tested. The severity varies from dog to dog, but it’s likely Peebucks will be on a lot of medication to treat his pain for about two weeks. I dread it, but it’s a journey that we will go on together and, in the meantime, I am doing all I can to make his life amazing: lots of time at the park, visits with doggy friends, more snuggling than ever before. And treats, lots of treats!
